¤Ï¦å¦½¤u¼t¹B°Ê¡A»OÆW¡A¥ø·~ªÀ·|³d¥ô¡A¶V«n¡A°ê®a¾÷Ãö
ABSTRACT
Today corporations of the developed world associated with established
brand names have generally
accepted the concept of corporate social responsibility and have begun to press
their supplier factories in developing countries to upgrade their labour standards. But the impact thus far is
sporadic and the scope limited. This article argues that the state has to be brought back in.
Based on the documentary
evidence and field data on the management behaviour of Taiwanese manufacturing suppliers in Vietnam and
China, it is shown that mediation by the Vietnamese government has had a
positive impact on labour
standards. Based on the evidence from China
and Vietnam, the article concludes that
three types of governments can help to arrest the continued
deteriorations in labour standards in the developing world: the
states from which the manufacturing companies migrate, the host states where the products are
made, and the importer states of the developed world.
